    alexis jumping

A total of 10 Jets went to the Junior Olympics to wrap up the year. Each gave his of her all on the biggest stage of the season and everyone had something to be proud of.

Kylee completed her wildly successful year by earning medals in three events in Norfolk, VA at the AAU JO’s. She ran a great race to finish second in the 10 year old 400 in a new Jets record 1:01.78. That came about three hours after she lowered her team record in the preliminary round of the 200 to 27.94. Four days later she ran a 28.25 for fourth place overall. Kylee also grabbed a fourth place medal in the 100, 13.85 being her best time of the three rounds.

Alexis was the other Jet to place in the top eight, bounding 36-02 in her specialty, the triple jump, for a bronze medal on the first day of competition. Two days later she missed the finals of the long jump by ¾ of an inch, soaring 16-08.5 for ninth place. Alexis also ran the 100.

    USATF Region 1 Qualifier
    July 11-12, 2015 - Fitchburg, MA

    group shot

A small but potent group of athletes went to the USATF Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships in Fitchburg on July 11 and 12. For most, it was simply a chance to see what they could do against the best USATF runners in our region. The meet wasn’t as deep in most of our athletes’ events as the AAU Regional meet but it still gave our runners a chance to sharpen their skills. In all, the Jets didn’t disappoint. Four runners won a total of 10 events and five others finished in the top five in eight events to qualify for USATF National Junior Olympics.

The highlight of the meet was Kylee setting a new team record in the 9-10 200 in 27.95. That run plus her 13.74 100 and 1:03.92 400 spelled total domination for Kylee, who has been undefeated in the sprints this season.

Also undefeated in the sprints this season, Devonte won both the 15-16 200 (22.56) and 400 (50.81 PR). Alexis remained undefeated in the jumps this season, taking gold in the 13-14 long (16-06) and triple (35-06.5) as well as the 100 (12.60 PR). Our fourth gold medal winner, Denmark, set PR’s while winning the 8&U 400 in 1:18.66 and 800 in 2:56.09. Denmark was also fourth in the 200.

    Lucas D-G (8&U 1500), Mianci (11-12 200 & 400) Peyton (11-12 200 & 400) Kaori (13-14 200) and Wallace (15-16 800) all had top five finishes, good enough to qualify for the USATF JO’s. [Full Results]

While most of our qualifiers will bypass the USATF JO’s to go to the AAU JO’s this year, Denmark will make the trip to Jacksonville. Good luck to him at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships.

Double gold winners were Alexis 14 y.o. 100 & LJ and Davonte 15-16 100 & 200. Other golds went to Lucas A in the 14 y.o. 800 and Jahphiah in the 15-16 400. Congratulations Lucas and Jon!

Two days before the running of the most recent Boston Marathon, middle school student/athletes from each of the Marathon route’s cities and towns toed the line in the Back Bay for the B.A.A. Invitational 1000 meter run and Jets athletes were right at the front of the pack. It's a cool event because the finish line is the same as the one for the Boston Marathon. Lucas A. comfortably won the boys’ race in 2:54.1. Jon came in third in 3:02.4, narrowly missing second by one tenth of a second. With Lucas and Jon's strong showing, Brookline boys team also won.

In the girls’ race, Hattie finished third in 3:34.1, just four tenths out of second. She also helped Brookline girls team come in second place.

Nice job to those three talented runners. [Full results]

Peyton and Kylee Place at the Colgate Games

    Congratulations Peyton and Kylee!

For six long weekends Peyton and Kylee, along with hundreds of other girls from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia and as far away as Georgia traveled to New York to compete in the 2015 Colgate Games.

Peyton continued to show her versatility as a runner and competed well enough in the 200 meter and 55 meter to qualify for the Finals in both races. Even though she hasn’t run the 55 meter since she was 8 years old, Peyton chose to compete in the 55 meter Finals. It paid off. She finished 3rd overall, receiving a monetary grant that can be applied toward her college tuition. Kylee qualified for the finals in her go-to race, the 400 meter. She won the race last year, finishing 1st overall. This year, she competed against girls a full year older than her, and compete she did. Kylee finished 5th overall and ran a PR of 1:04.44. This time smashed the current 9 year old girl (and boy!) record for the Jets. Way to go Peyton and Kylee!

High School Jets Strongly End Indoor Season

On February 21, 2015 6 members of the older Jets competed in the Mass All State Meet. In order to get to this meet each one of them had to place in the top of their respective state division meet. Here’s a rundown of how each of them completed their championship season.

maya and sydneyMaya, running for Cambridge Ringe and Latin, placed fourth in the All State Meet in the 600 in 1:34.91. A week earlier she won the Division 1 600 (1:35.59) and teamed up with Sydney to win the 4X200 relay in 1:44.59 a time which holds up as the second best time in Mass this season. Maya was fourth in the New England Championships in the 600 (1:35.92). Maya also placed second in the Dual County League Championships in the 1000 (3:00.21).

Sydney, also competing for Cambridge R&L placed sixth at the All States in the 55 (7.36). At the Division 1 meet she was second in the 55 (7.19) and 300 (41.17) and teamed up with Maya to win the 4X200 relay (1:44.59). At New Englands she was sixth in the 55 (7.24). Sydney also placed second in the Dual County League Championships in the 300 (40.89).

Spikey came in 4th place in the 4x200 relay (1:47.49). She also earned an eighth place medal in the 300 (41.84) running for Brookline High in the All State Meet. She had previously placed seventh in Division 1 in the 300 (42.29) and won the Bay State Conference Championships 300 (42.30).

Serena was 13th in the All State meet in the 300 in 42.12 running for Algonquin Regional High School. She placed sixth in the 300 at the Division 2 meet (42.76). Serena won the Mid-Wachusett League Championship in the 300 (43.70) and placed third in the 55 (7.63).

Jahphiah, competing for West Roxbury High, finished 17th in the 300 at the All State meet in 42.64. She was the top freshman finisher in the 300. In the Division 2 Championships she was 5th overall (42.32).

Quinn ran a leg on the Brookline 4X800 team that placed 16th at All States and ninth at Division 1. What’s remarkable about this is that he was one of only 3 freshman boys in the 4x800 at All States out of 27 relay teams and one of only 8 freshmen boys in the whole meet. Quinn also placed 11th (top freshman) at the Bay State League Championships in the 1000 (2:47.88).

Or the 35 Jets who placed in the top eight in individual events. Hosted by Cambridge Jets
    [Meet Info] [Results] [Photos]

The Cambridge Jets competed in the New England AAU District Track Championship on June 15 and performed, as Coach Curtis said, better than any Jets team has in that meet since 2003.  That is quite high praise for a team that is always at the top of it’s game for the district meet.

Overall, the Jets won 53 gold medals, 28 silver and 19 bronze medals. That's up from 39 gold, 12 silver and 7 bronze in 2012. Our athletes swept the top three places in nine events and we set meet records in 15 events.  It was quite a good day for the Jets and it seemed like every time you looked up, there were Jets at the front of the pack.

The kids have been working hard and this is the time of year when it really pays off.  During the next three or four weeks, look for them to push each other and for the coaches to try to bring out the best in each athlete.

Meet records went to: Kylee (8 & Under 200 & 400),  Laila (8 & Under Long Jump), Peyton (9 year old 200 & 400), Vivian (10 year old 800) Jordyn (11 year old 200),  Kaori (11 Year Old 400), Stephen (11 year old Long Jump), Alexis (12 year old Long Jump), Olivia (13 year old 100 Hurdles & HJ), Davonte (13 year old 400), Quinn (13 year old 1500) and Serena (17 – 18 year old 200).

  • Cambridge Jets Win Youth Relay in New Balance Grand Prix Meet - Feb 2013
    gran prix relay

Cambridge Jets continue to dominate the Youth Relay race at the New Balance Grand Prix meet winning the last 6 of 7 years. Every February, the New Balance meet is held at the Reggie Lewis track, where world class and Olympic runners come to compete. The meet holds a youth relay where local track teams send their best young sprinters (must be younger than High School age). The race has 2 boys and 2 girls running in a 4x200m. This year Olivia, Sam, Mianci and Davonte ran for the Jets, beating 5 other local teams.

The race was especially exciting because Mianci (10 years old) was asked to participate in the race only an hour before race time. Even though Mianci is fast for her age, all the other participants were 3-4 years older, quite a disadvantage, but she held her own. The Jets ran hard, had good hand offs and persevered. Watch the exciting race here:
